Senior Data Engineer

Decision Lens is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to design and lead the development of a flexible, scalable data layer. The ideal candidate thrives on solving complex data challenges and building robust systems that deliver reliable, actionable insights to public sector stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities

Design the Data Architecture

  • Define and implement a flexible data layer that supports both operational and analytical use cases.
  • Evaluate, select, and integrate cutting-edge technologies (data lakes, warehouses, catalogs, streaming pipelines) that balance scalability, performance, security, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Architect hybrid cloud/on-premises solutions that meet government security and compliance requirements.

Data Modeling & Standards

  • Develop logical and physical data models for structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data.
  • Establish governance, metadata, and lineage practices for consistency and compliance.

Integration & Interoperability

  • Design data flows between internal systems, external data sources, APIs, and cloud/on-prem environments.
  • Ensure interoperability with open formats and standards (e.g., Iceberg, Delta, Parquet, Arrow).

Performance & Reliability

  • Architect systems for high availability, scalability, and efficient query performance.
  • Implement monitoring, optimization, and automated quality checks.

Collaboration

  • Partner with engineers, customer experience, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into data solutions.
  • Mentor team members on best practices in data design, storage, and management.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • 10+ years of experience in data architecture, data engineering, or related roles.
  • Proven track record of designing and implementing modern data platforms (data lakes, data warehouses, lakehouses, or hybrid solutions).
  • Deep understanding of relational and non-relational databases, distributed data systems, and data modeling techniques.
  • Experience with open-source and cloud-based technologies (e.g., Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake, DuckLake, Hive Metastore, Presto/Trino, Spark, Kafka, Flink).
  • Strong knowledge of data governance, lineage, metadata management, and security best practices.
  • Proficiency in SQL and at least one programming language (Java, TypeScript, Python).
  • Experience with analytics/BI tools and query engines (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Qlik) preferred.
  • Exposure to machine learning data pipelines and feature stores preferred.
  • Familiarity with government or regulated-industry data compliance requirement preferred.

Location:  This position is remote. Travel and onsite meetings are required. Decision Lens headquarters are located in Arlington, VA.
