Every decision eventually reaches a person.
Think about the same moment from two perspectives.
For a public servant, circumstances can change quickly, resources can be limited, and difficult choices still must be made. What matters most right now? What information can we rely on? Who needs to be heard? How do we act with urgency while making a thoughtful decision?
For the American public, those choices become personal. They can determine whether a family gets the help it needs, whether a community receives a critical service, or whether something people depend on works when they need it most.
As Americans, we may ask ourselves: When I need something that government provides, can I trust that the decisions being made will help me and my family when it matters? Can I trust that the services my family and community rely on will be delivered well and that public resources will be used responsibly?
That is where mission and trust meet.
Trust is one of public service’s most valuable currencies. When people have confidence in the institutions and people serving them, there is greater opportunity to move a mission forward, work together, and deliver meaningful outcomes. When that confidence is weakened, even well-intended efforts can become harder to carry forward.
Most Americans will never see everything that goes into the decisions made across the public sector. They experience the result.
So what builds trust when circumstances keep changing? How do we make sure the people closest to a mission are heard? How do leaders navigate competing needs when there is no perfect answer? How do we embrace new technology while preserving human judgment? And when trust has been disrupted, what does it take to rebuild it?
At FOCUS26, Dr. Yasmeen Burns will draw from her research and real-world experience with how trust is built, lost, and rebuilt, joining federal leaders, private sector voices, and people experiencing and shaping these changes firsthand.
Together, they will explore trust from both sides of the mission: the people responsible for delivering it and the people who experience its impact. The conversation will examine how listening, evidence, transparency, participation, and follow through can strengthen trust and help turn difficult choices into meaningful outcomes.
Because public service is ultimately human. Behind every mission are people working to deliver it.
And on the other side are the American people counting on it.
